Adelaide Town Hall

Adelaide Town Hall has been central to the city’s civic and cultural life for more than 160 years. As part of the City of Adelaide’s ongoing commitment to heritage conservation, a comprehensive program of internal refurbishment and external conservation works has been undertaken to secure its long-term viability.

Internally, works to the historic 1866 Auditorium, have addressed safety risks and improved its commercial appeal. New research enabled a more accurate reconstruction of the 1877 decorative scheme, integrating existing and reconstructed finishes with a revised colour palette. Works were completed within a tightly managed seven-day window to minimise operational disruption. Additional refurbishments were completed to other significant spaces, unified through bespoke carpet designs. Externally, staged facade conservation addressed stone deterioration, earthquake-damaged elements of the Albert Tower, public safety risks, and ongoing settlement issues. Guided by the ICOMOS Burra Charter, the project revitalises the Town Hall while respecting its heritage significance.
